How To Take Care Of Your Apartment While Traveling
29 November 2022 | 0 comments | Posted by Dea Muric in Hit the Road
Going on vacation is always fun and exciting. However, while you are planning your vacation, you should make a plan for how you will care for your apartment. Check that you have taken all necessary precautions to protect your pets, plants, and, most importantly, your apartment from potential break-ins. Here are some things you need to do to take care of your apartment while you are away.
Tidy up your home
Cleaning up may seem like a lot to handle while you are packing and rushing to the airport, but nothing beats the feeling of coming home to a clean environment and fresh air. It also helps prevent things from going bad and gathering insects while you are away. Therefore, you should scrub the sinks and toilets, vacuum, and toss or eat any fruits sitting out.
Clean out the fridge
While you are cleaning your apartment, take some time to clean out the fridge too. Do not leave any fruit that is about to go bad in the fridge. It is recommended that you either freeze, eat, or toss food in your fridge, as no one wants to come home to a fridge full of rotten and stinky food.
Take out the trash
Taking out the trash is the main part of cleaning your apartment. Moreover, if you clean the fridge, it is worth reiterating that you should definitely make sure to take out the trash before you leave. Otherwise, you risk coming home to all sorts of smells and insects.
Check the laundry
While packing and cleaning the apartment, don't forget the last load of laundry. Before you leave for your vacation, check your washing machine and your dryer. Coming home to a load of laundry that has had a week to sit is a buzzkill.
Take precautions for fire
Before leaving your apartment, make sure to unplug all electronics around the house that don't need power while you are away. Not only will it lower your energy bill, but it will also lower the risk of a fire. It would be best if you unplugged things like routers, TVs, computers, or chargers.
Program your thermostat
Another way to save money on energy bills is by setting the thermostat to an away program. Many new thermostats offer the feature of letting you adjust the temperature when you are not home. You can disable the away mode hours before you arrive home and walk into a perfectly cooled home.
Put lights on timer
Another simple step to take while you are away is to put lights around the house on timers. You can do this the old way or use smart bulbs. You can also put your entire apartment in vacation mode. For example, put a radio or a TV on a schedule with a smart plug. This way, you will have the TV playing for a few hours, making others believe that someone is inside.
Ask a trusted neighbour to get your mail
Letting your mail gather makes others believe that someone is not home. Therefore, to avoid any unpleasant robberies in your apartment, ask a trusted neighbour to gather your mail every day for you. Secure all doors and windows
Before you leave for your vacation, make sure to close all doors and windows since burglars find a way of coming in through these openings. However, if you easily forget to lock doors or don't feel like leaving your apartment alone, you can easily hire a property management company that will do all the work for you.
They will be at your service whether you are travelling the world or just abroad for business. If you are going to be away for a long time, they could even hire tenants for your property.
Install security cameras, smart locks, and home security systems
Security cameras, alarms, smart locks, and other smart electronics alert you when someone enters your home, but they can't guarantee that your things will be protected. However, to make sure that any of your valuables or your documents remain untouched, you should put them in a safe.
Conclusion
Whether you're travelling around the world or just away for a couple of days for work, you shouldn't be keeping your mind on your apartment. However, you should take some steps to protect your home or just hire a property management company that will do all the work for you.
