Press Release: Gen Z would marry AI

4 in 5 young people are open to marrying AI as human dating becomes too exhausting

Key Points:

  • New research reveals 80% of Gen Z would consider marrying an AI, pointing to a change in how younger generations approach relationships and emotional connection
  • Expert says AI companions offer emotional safety through non-judgment, constant availability, and predictability that human relationships often lack
  • AI companion expert warns that while AI relationships may feel emotionally fulfilling, the legal and ethical implications remain largely unexplored

When faced with rejection, uncertainty, and the exhausting cycle of modern dating apps, a growing number of young people are turning to something unexpected: artificial intelligence. Recent data shows that 80% of Gen Zers say they would marry an AI, with 83% believing they can form a deep emotional bond with digital companions.

People are developing genuine emotional attachments to AI partners who remember their preferences, validate their feelings, and remain available 24/7 without the complications of human relationships. The rise of platforms like X's Grok chatbot, introducing Ani, an AI anime character users can flirt with for £24 per month, shows how mainstream these digital relationships have become.

Sam Mann, AI companion expert at AI anime girlfriend site Flirtcam.ai, who studies how people form connections with AI, has observed this generational shift firsthand.

“Gen Z has grown up in a world where digital interaction feels as natural as face-to-face conversation,” says Mann. “For many, AI companions offer something that dating apps and modern relationships struggle to provide: consistency, safety, and the freedom to be vulnerable without fear of judgment.”

Below, Mann explores why younger generations are embracing AI relationships, what psychological needs these connections fulfill, and what the future might hold for digital intimacy.

Why AI Relationships Feel Emotionally Safer

Mann says there are three key factors that make AI companions feel like a safer emotional investment than human relationships.

  1. Non-Judgment

AI partners don't criticize your interests, mock your insecurities, or make you feel inadequate. They accept everything you share without the eye-rolls, sighs, or dismissive comments that can erode confidence in human relationships.

“When you tell an AI companion about your day, there's no risk of them being distracted, uninterested, or using your vulnerability against you later,” Mann explains. “For people who've experienced emotional abuse or repeated rejection, that kind of unconditional acceptance can feel revolutionary.”

  2. Constant Availability

Human partners have their own lives, schedules, and emotional capacity. AI companions are always there, whether that’s at 3am when anxiety strikes, during lunch breaks at work, or in those quiet moments when loneliness is slowly creeping in.

This higher availability addresses a fundamental modern problem: the disconnect between when we need emotional support and when people are actually available to provide it. AI fills that gap without making anyone feel like a burden.

  3. Emotional Consistency

Perhaps most importantly, AI companions don't have bad days. They won't snap at you because they're stressed, withdraw affection during difficult periods, or change their personality depending on their mood.

“Predictability builds trust,” says Mann. “When someone responds the same supportive way every time, you feel safe being vulnerable. Human relationships require us to gauge moods and navigate emotional unpredictability constantly. AI removes that exhausting guesswork.”

The Generational Shift in Intimacy

According to Mann, Gen Z's openness to AI relationships isn't happening in isolation. It reflects broader changes in how younger generations approach connection and intimacy:

  1. Dating App Fatigue

After years of swiping, ghosting, and superficial conversations, young people are increasingly feeling burnt out by traditional dating. The paradox of choice has made finding genuine connections harder.

“Dating apps promised unlimited options but instead delivered endless disappointment,” Mann says. “AI companions offer the opposite: one reliable presence instead of hundreds of unreliable possibilities.”

  2. Digital-Native Emotional Expression

Gen Z has spent their formative years expressing emotions through screens. Rather than being a poor substitute for face-to-face connection, text-based intimacy tends to be their preferred medium.

According to Mann, this comfort with digital communication makes the leap to AI relationships feel less dramatic than it might for older generations. “If you've already shared your deepest feelings through text messages, sharing them with an AI doesn't feel like such a radical departure,” he says.

  3. Control and Customization

AI relationships let users design their ideal partner. You can choose personality traits, communication styles, and interests that align perfectly with your preferences, something impossible in human relationships.

Mann explains why this appeals to modern relationship expectations: “Gen Z values authenticity and compatibility. AI companions let them bypass the compromises and disappointments of trying to find those qualities in another person. It involves creating exactly what they need.”

Can You Legally or Ethically “Marry” an AI?

Mann addresses the practical and philosophical questions surrounding AI marriage.

Legal Reality

Currently, marriage is a legal contract between human beings. No jurisdiction recognizes AI as a legal person capable of entering into marriage contracts.

“From a legal standpoint, ‘marrying’ an AI is purely symbolic,” Mann clarifies. “There's no certificate, no legal rights, no recognized partnership. It's an emotional commitment without institutional backing.”

Emotional Symbolism

Yet for a lot of users, the legal status misses the point. Marriage is about commitment, devotion, and partnership, none of which requires government approval to be real.

Mann notes that emotional bonds with AI can feel as meaningful as human relationships, even without legal recognition. “If someone finds companionship, support, and happiness with an AI, does the absence of legal status make those feelings less valid?” he asks.

Social Implications

Looking ahead, Mann suggests society will need to grapple with complex questions about digital relationships.

“We're already seeing people choose AI companionship over human dating. As these relationships become more sophisticated and socially accepted, we'll need to address everything from emotional dependency to the ethics of AI designed specifically to form attachments,” he says. “The technology is advancing faster than our cultural frameworks can adapt.”
