6 Reasons Remote Workers Are a Challenge for Businesses

07 May 2019 | 0 comments | Posted by Mathew Jade in Industry Experts

Challenges businesses have with remote workers

Remote working is a job that allows employees to fulfil their tasks outside of the traditional job environment. This includes employees working from home or at an isolated place. Due to the impact of globalization, it is becoming increasingly popular in recent years, as many large organizations have their workforce in underdeveloped countries, due to the cheap availability of labour.

According to a census, 5.2% of the Americans have increasingly been working from home, and remote work has grown faster than any other commute work. The rise in trends can be illustrated by improved Internet facility and flexible working conditions.

Though there are many proponents for remote work like any other work, it also has serious disadvantages for various businesses that hire them. Remote work brings a whole list of issues which cause a problem when you work in an office environment. It can hurt your productivity and efficiency as a worker.

Some of the challenges that businesses face when hiring remote employees are listed below.

Communication Gap

One of the main challenges for businesses is the communication gap. Having excellent communication is of paramount importance for successful firms so that all employees have access to uniform information.

Having strong communication is even more critical when remote workers are involved since you want to be assured that you can reach your employees when needed. It is highly frustrating if you try to contact your employees and they fail to answer your calls.

Employers require efficient communication to get regular feedback regarding the tasks allocated on time. Good communication plays a vital role in making a project successful which is why employers stress on it continuously.

Another aspect to note is that remote workers do not have access to a professional leader who can correctly demonstrate the tasks to be done as in the office environment. They spend a lot of time trying to implement their own solutions which can be costly for your company.

Culture and Whereabouts

Culture plays a vital role as far as businesses are concerned. The more alienated your worker’s culture is from you, the more challenges it brings for the company. This can have a negative effect on your business and lead to a loss.

For instance, financing conditions may differ at the location of your company to those of the remote workers. What then? They might not have enough alternate funding facilities – Fast Capital 360 – or the conditions for loan applicability could be harsh. This makes it difficult to apply financing techniques to bail out a business from potential bankruptcy.

The difference between time zones is also a major hindrance if you want to share information when working on a project. It might lead to miscommunication and delays. The language barrier is also a major concern since not everyone is fluent in English. Misinterpretation can lead to an error on the project that you are working on.

Also, in order to avoid legal prosecutions, it is difficult to keep track of the employees when they are remote workers.

Trust Deficit

Developing a trustful relationship with employees is important for a successful working environment. Yet this is one issue companies face when hiring remote workers. It is difficult to judge whether the remote workers that you employ are trustworthy or not. Since you can’t keep a tab on them through physical presence, there can be a lot of issues.

Many companies have to struggle with their labour unions because of wage issues or other constraints as the workforce is remote.

Monitoring Their Routine

Another challenge that a business might face is monitoring the activities of their remote workers. Without any physical supervision, you can never be certain that your employees are working to their best capability on the project or not. This can lead to disastrous consequences for your business because when you find out about their inefficiency, it will most likely be too late to rectify their errors.

Even hiring new employees will increase the costs incurred. Although you relegate remote management to observe the progress of your projects, still the remote workers play an important role as the project can be a success only if they achieve the set deadlines.

Incurring Costs with Little ROI

You will probably wonder whether all the costs that you incur for training the workers and the return that they provide is worth the investment or not. You are essentially taking a huge risk in hiring these employees and if they fail to deliver, then your company will incur a huge cost just to replace them.

Still, you can manage to get better returns if you deploy performance-based rewards in the company structure so that they can feel appreciated. Without giving them benefits, they’d be just an added burden to your business.

Unforeseen and Unmanageable Conditions

Sometimes issues arise in a company which are uncontrollable and your work suffers due to them. For example, if your worker falls sick, though it’s not their fault, yet your work suffers.

Often the problem arises when the workers are not contractually bound with you. You will have to redo the hiring process which will consume a lot of time. This will lead to increased costs and the business will suffer.

Free up your freelancers

Though a healthy business should always expand, if it requires remote workers, it will get difficult to manage and administer. The above-listed problems are some of the issues that businesses experience when working with remote workers. It’s inevitable that you’ll have to deal with productivity downfall and interruptions, but if you exercise some autonomy and flexibility, perhaps there might be higher growth.
