Email Getting a Revamp With The Introduction of AMP

27 March 2019 | 0 comments | Posted by Che Kohler in nichemarket Advice

AMP to power email

Email marketing has been around for decades and was one of the first forms of digital marketing and is still successfully used by many companies, for instance, Hubspot who has built their business on the back of both EDM (Email Direct Mail) and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) emails. An email is still an effective form of direct communication in helping get your content and message to subscribers, but it has become a dated medium in terms of content.

While other digital channels like search marketing and social media marketing continue to improve their offerings and remain dynamic to continue to capture users email has been relegated to basic HTML, images and text, until now.

Email gets a brand new set of features

The AMP project has been primarily focused on improving the mobile experience for search results with its ultra lightweight, super fast AMP pages protocal which has been seen as the go-to for mobile page rendering standards. But it has not stopped there now the AMP Project’s has a new mission in mind to revamp the way we see and use emails.

As I mentioned, earlier email functionality had not changed much since the first time it was introduced. However using the AMP protocal which is inherently fast and secure, the AMP project has now brought AMP technology to email to give users an interactive, real-time experience that also keeps inboxes safe.

AMP now enables all-new email experiences like being able to:

  • Submit RSVPs to events
  • Fill out questionnaires
  • Browse catalogues
  • Or respond to comments right within the email.

Emails can now become dynamic pieces of content and also stay up to date, displaying the freshest content from comment threads or the latest recommendations.

How AMP Emails will work in Gmail

An example of the AMP email

Bringing AMP emails to major email providers

The AMP for email spec has been rolled out to some major email providers around the world including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook.com, and Mail.Ru. As each of these providers launches support, senders will scale the reach of their AMP emails to users.

Email services that already support AMP emails include:

  • Yahoo Mail
  • Outlook.com
  • Mail.Ru
  • Gmail

Email becomes an interactive experience

AMP emails could be the breath of fresh air Email has been crying out for to bring it up to par with other interactive digital marketing mediums. Having this additional support will provide a range of possibilities not only for direct marketing initiatives but for CRM too, and email marketers should look to incorporate these options into their strategies for 2019.
