How To Choose The Ideal Dog Food
28 April 2026 | 0 comments | Posted by Edward Fourie in Fur, Fins & Feathers
You may have heard that the best dog food for one dog may not be the best for another–and for good reason.
There are plenty of factors that affect the type of dog food your pet needs. Age, size, breed, current weight, and lifestyle affect the specific nutritional needs and should all be carefully considered when deciding which product to buy, whether wet or dry.
Buying your dog the right food
To buy food for your dog, focus on your furry friend’s age, size, and nutritional needs. Choose dog food that is natural and has no fillers. Opt for high-quality, toxic-free dog treats, gummies, and other dog treats.
As a pet parent, you always want to give your dog the best for his health and well-being.
Choosing the perfect diet or food for your furry friend is one of the most important decisions you make, as it affects your pet's quality of life. While many consider price the determining factor when buying dog food, there is a lot more to it than that.
You don't pick your own meals based on price, do you? No, you focus on quality, taste, ingredients and cost.
The same applies to dog food; the dog food you give should be balanced in terms of protein, fibre, and required nutrients.
Today, in the South African market, there are various dog food options and choosing one is really challenging for any pet parent. To help, we have listed some points to focus on when buying the best pet food for your companion.
What should dog food contain?
A balanced dog food should contain 37 essential nutrients divided into six major groups to support everything from muscle growth to immune health.
1. Proteins
Proteins are the building blocks of cells, tissues, and organs. A good food should list a specific high-quality animal protein (like chicken, beef, or fish) as the first ingredient.
- Essential Amino Acids: Dogs require 10 essential amino acids (such as lysine and tryptophan) that their bodies cannot produce on their own.
- Role: Supports muscle repair, enzyme production, and a healthy coat.
2. Fats
Fats are the most concentrated energy source, providing more than twice the energy of proteins or carbohydrates.
- Essential Fatty Acids: Look for Omega-3 (fish oil, flaxseed) and Omega-6 (chicken fat, vegetable oils).
- Role: Aids in vitamin absorption, regulates body temperature, and promotes brain health.
3. Carbohydrates and Fibre
While not strictly required by AAFCO for survival, carbohydrates are a vital source of glucose for energy.
- Complex Carbs: Ingredients like brown rice, oats, and sweet potatoes provide sustained energy.
- Fibre: Derived from ingredients like beet pulp or wheat bran, it is essential for healthy digestion and gut bacteria.
4. Vitamins
Vitamins act as catalysts for metabolic reactions and are divided into two categories:
- Fat-Soluble (A, D, E, K): Essential for vision, bone health, and immune function.
- Water-Soluble (B-Complex, C): Critical for energy metabolism and nervous system health.
5. Minerals
Minerals are inorganic nutrients that support structural and metabolic functions.
- Macrominerals: Calcium and Phosphorus (for bone strength), Magnesium, Sodium, and Potassium.
- Trace Minerals: Iron (oxygen transport), Zinc (skin health), Copper, Manganese, Selenium, and Iodine.
6. Water
Water is the most critical nutrient, accounting for 60-70% of an adult dog's body weight. While canned food has a higher moisture content (up to 78%) than dry kibble (roughly 10%), fresh water must always be available.
Buy breed-specific dog food
Every dog breed has different dietary needs. If you have a small breed dog, then you need to buy easy-to-digest dog food that is made from natural elements and causes no stomach upset to your little one. On the other hand, the large breeds like German Shepherd, Labrador dogs, and others need protein and nutrition-rich food as they are more prone to musculoskeletal issues.
Always choose a quality brand for your pet, like acana dog food, to give a healthy and happy life to your furries. Make sure you buy optimal-size kibble so that it doesn't choke small breeds and doesn't provide insufficient food for large breeds.
Consider the dog's age
Another factor that you should consider when buying dog food is the age of your pet. Puppies need a food that is in liquid form or small in size so they can easily digest it without getting sick. Also, the puppy food should be free from any kind of metals and toxins. As your dog grows, his nutritional needs change, so buy food that has all the necessary vitamins, amino acids, and minerals.
Feeding your dog a healthy food formulated for their life stage means they’re getting the best nutrients for their muscles, joints, skin, fur, and every other body part. Giving protein-rich food to dogs helps support their muscles and DHA, an important nutrient found in a mother’s milk.
Meanwhile, fish oil is excellent for supporting brain development and trainability.
No fillers and no preservatives
One of the biggest pitfalls in many dog foods is the use of fillers and preservatives. Many times, companies add unwanted ingredients (corn, wheat, soy, and gluten) to dog food that don’t help your furry friend in any way. Fillers are actually low-quality, nutrient-deficient ingredients that are added to increase the volume of dog food.
Also, there are many preservatives like BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin that are often added to dog food to increase its shelf life. But these are harmful to your dog’s health and can cause many diseases. So, read the ingredients carefully and don’t buy dog food that has chemicals, fillers, or any other harmful material.
So, the bottom line is you should buy the best dog food that is natural, nutrient-rich, free from fillers, breed-specific, and formulated according to dog age.
