Top 10 Fruits and Vegetables Toxic to Dogs
25 September 2020 | 1 comments | Posted by Monica Heft in Fur, Fins & Feathers
Your dog is your best companion who cares for you and protects you and your family in needed times. In the world of pet animals, the dog is the one who is the most preferred because of its loyal nature and the way it gets affectionate towards its owner. Now that your dog loves you, it is your responsibility that you care for him the same way he did.
Caring for dogs includes many things in which the most important is to look for their eating habits. Are you feeding the right food to your dog? However, it is apparent that you always want to share your food with the pup, but at the same time, you have to be careful about how safe the food is for your buddy.
Although it becomes difficult for you when your dog comes with those innocent eyes begging for your food, some human foods are safe for dogs. But before feeding anything to your pet, you might be aware of all animal information, whether you have a cat, dog, or any other pet.
Since fruits and vegetables are healthy for you, you might assume that it can benefit your dog. In some instances, some fruits and veggies can result in severe conditions in your dog. So, what fruits and vegetables should you avoid feeding your dog?
The followings are the items that you should avoid feeding to your dog:
1. Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins are toxic for dogs; however, your dog might have consumed them without showing any symptoms. But these foods can cause vomiting, lethargy, and kidney failure in dogs. In some cases, kidney failure can occur relatively quickly, depending on the dog's size that ingests them.
2. Avocados
Your dog should never eat an avocado. While it can be a healthy snack for humans but dogs, it can be dangerous. This is so because the shaft, skin, and leaves of avocado contain a toxic that usually causes vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs. However, the fleshy part inside the fruit does not have as much toxin, but it is still not safe to feed dogs.
3. Onion and garlic
Always ensure that your dog stays away from these two ingredients. However, Garlic has many medicinal properties, and it acts as an immune booster, but it can risk your dog's health. Onion and Garlic contain a substance that can damage a dog's red blood cells, leading to Anemia. If your dog accidentally has consumed onion, its toxicity symptoms may include lethargy, inflated heart and respiratory rates, and pale gums.
4. Cherries
The fleshy part of the cherries is safe for dogs. The plant and the pit contain cyanide, a toxin for dogs, resulting in death and respiratory failure. The cyanide disturbs the cellular oxygen transport, which signs in difficulty breathing and red gums.
5. Mushrooms
From the various mushroom species, only a few are toxic for a dog's health. It is important to feed only the right one, and when you are unable to identify the right one, it is beneficial not to provide your dog with any mushroom species. If the dog consumes mushrooms, it can result in seizures, tremors, and organ failure.
6. Rhubarb
Rhubarb can be a mouth-watering veggie for humans, but it is not at all a healthy dish for dogs. The leaves and stems of rhubarb decrease the dog's body's calcium level, resulting in renal failure, damaging the nervous system and digestive tract. The symptoms include tremors, seizures, and other heart diseases.
7. Tomato plants
The actual red tomato is suggested safe for dogs, but the plant is toxic for dogs. The stems, leaves, and unripened tomato can cause gastrointestinal issues in dogs. When your pup consumes many tomatoes, it can prove fatal for it, but it is always better to keep the dog away from the tomatoes.
8. Raw and green potatoes
You might get surprised here because potatoes are something which is considered as a high-quality food for dogs. But unripe, green, or raw potatoes are toxic for your dogs. The symptoms displayed on consuming any of these varieties include vomiting, seizures, heart irregularities, and nausea.
9. Nuts
It would help if you never fed your dog with nuts; the different kinds of nuts carry various other symptoms and affect your dog—especially the brazil nuts, walnuts, pecan nuts, macadamia nuts, and peanuts. It is better to keep nuts out of your dog's reach to prevent your dog from getting any fatal disease.
10. Broccoli
However, broccoli is safe for dogs but only when it is given in small quantities. Broccoli has many health benefits as it is high in fibre and vitamin C and lower in fat. Broccoli contains isothiocyanates, which usually result in mild or severe gastric issues in dogs. Also, broccoli stems have been known to cause an obstacle in the oesophagus.
Conclusion
Every dog owner loves their dogs and wanted to feed them with the quality foods to avoid any medical problems. As above, we have seen that these fruits and vegetables are not safe for them, but what about the dogs whose diet includes eggs, meat, and fish? When you feed your dog with cooked beef and egg, your canine is safe, but when you provide them with raw meat or egg, this can be dangerous.
We know that dogs love to lick bones, but not all bones need to be safe for them. Now you might wonder, can dogs eat pork chop bones? Whether it is raw or cooked, it is not advisable to feed it if we talk about pork bones. When your dog chews pork bone, it is likely to crack, and when your dog attempts to swallow, it leads to choking and blocking to the intestine and oesophagus.
All people worldwide are dog lovers and welcome them in their families with an open heart. So, make sure you feed your buddy with safe and healthy food.
