4 Tips On Maintaining Good Dog Skin Health
22 June 2020 | 0 comments | Posted by Claire Wouters in Fur, Fins & Feathers
Taking care of a dog can improve your life in many ways, but keep in mind that having one will require commitment and responsibility. For you to ensure that your dog stays strong and healthy, you need to know how to manage ticks on a dog, determine the right diet for them, and allot time for their exercise. You also must schedule regular trips to the vet for vaccines and other shots.
Maintaining your dog's skin health is one of the most important responsibilities you'll have when you become a dog owner. The skin of your dog is vital to their health as this protects their bones, muscles, and internal organs, and regulates their body temperature. Having poor skin health can eventually become the reason why your dog will become sickly and less sociable.
Make sure that these don't happen by maintaining your dog's good skin health. Listed below are some easy tips to help you achieve this goal:
1. Limit the amounts of baths you give your dog and pay attention to the products you use
It's common for humans to take a bath or shower whenever they feel warm or humid. Most people can't move comfortably if their bodies are soaking in sweat. But regardless of how humid the weather is, you should not bathe your dog more than once a week. Your dog's body is different from your own and bathing them more than once a week will only deplete the natural oils from their skin that can eventually trigger dry skin.
Moreover, when giving your dog a bath, pay attention to the kind of products you use. Your dog's skin is different, which means that you can't let them use your own shampoo and conditioner. You should invest in products that are intended for dogs to prevent any problems in your dog's skin and coat.
Scouting for the best shampoo and conditioner for your dog is very easy today as several brands offer these products. To narrow down your options, look for ones that suit your dog's needs. If you want to get rid of the odour in your dog's fur or lessen itch in their bodies, look for a product that addresses these problems.
2. Be cautious of your dog's diet
The foods you feed your dog can also affect their skin health. Giving your dog excessive amounts of chicken, eggs, beef, and lamb may result in allergies and rashes on your dog's skin. When left untreated, these can worsen and trigger other severe health conditions, as well.
You can steer away from this direction by feeding your dog with a healthy diet all year long. Some of the healthiest options for your dog include carrots, apples (without seeds), fish, and white rice.
A healthy diet is vital, especially if you live in a cold country or city. You need to make sure that your dog has healthy skin and nourished coat before the colder months, to ensure they don't get sick due to the weather.
If you know that your dogs have sensitive skin, it's best to consult a vet before creating their own diets. A vet will surely help you determine the kind of foods that you should and shouldn't feed to your furry friend.
3. Invest in a humidifier and place it near your dog at night
Taking care of a dog is like taking care of a child – you need to look after them 24/7 to ensure they live healthy lives. You can easily achieve this goal when you invest in a humidifier.
This device works by circulating the indoor air and filtering any allergens that might be inside your home. This is especially helpful if you own a lot of carpets as these items can easily catch or trap dirt from outside your home.
Humidifiers can improve the quality of your indoor air, giving you peace of mind that your dog's environment is indeed clean.
4. Never leave your dog outside during cold weather in long periods
Regardless of the time of the year, your dogs will always need enough exercise. Physical activities can help them become sociable and keep stress at bay. But regardless of how tempting it is to have fun in the snow and spend a lot of time with your dog outdoors, make sure that you don't do it.
Exposing your dog to cold weather for long periods of time can increase their chances of developing dry skin and other skin conditions.
Consistency is key
As mentioned, being a dog owner will require a long-term commitment, so make sure that you stay consistent with your efforts for you to see any changes in your dog's skin health. The sooner you incorporate these tips into your daily routine, the faster your dog's skin health will improve.
