As Gold Prices Hit Record Highs, LoanAgainst Offers South Africans a Way to Unlock Cash Without Selling Their Gold

As Gold Prices Hit Record Highs, LoanAgainst Offers South Africans a Way to Unlock Cash Without Selling Their Gold

Secured lender LoanAgainst reports growing interest in gold-backed loans as bullion trades above US$4,000 an ounce and JSE gold miners rally.

As the gold price continues its historic climb, secured asset lender LoanAgainst is urging South Africans not to assume that cashing in on the rally means parting with their gold for good. The company says its gold-backed loan product allows individuals to raise cash quickly against the value of their jewellery or coins while retaining ownership of the asset.

A record-breaking run for gold

Gold has surged past US$4,000 an ounce for the first time, a milestone that triggered a strong rally in gold shares on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, including Gold Fields, AngloGold Ashanti and Harmony Gold.

Analysts have linked the rally to broader economic uncertainty, heightened geopolitical tensions and expectations of further US interest rate cuts, all of which have reinforced gold's traditional role as a safe-haven asset.

For many South African households, a rising gold price has historically meant one thing: an opportunity to sell inherited or unused jewellery for a lump sum. LoanAgainst is highlighting an alternative that keeps the asset in the family while still releasing its value.

Borrowing against gold, rather than selling it

LoanAgainst provides short-term secured loans against a range of fully paid-up assets, including gold jewellery, coins and other valuables, as well as vehicles and antiques. Because the loan is secured against the asset rather than the borrower's income or credit profile, the company says the process involves minimal paperwork and can be turned around quickly. This is a contrast to unsecured personal loans, which typically require lengthy affordability checks.

"We do not offer personal loans," the company notes. "Our loans are collateral-based and secured only against assets that are fully paid up, which allows us to keep the process simple, discreet and fast for the client."

Why this matters now

With gold prices elevated, the value that can be unlocked against a given piece of jewellery or a given gold holding is higher than it would have been a year or two ago. LoanAgainst says this has led to more enquiries from clients who want short-term liquidity without permanently disposing of an appreciating asset, particularly those who may want to benefit from further upside in the gold price.

“When gold is trading at record highs, selling outright means giving up any further upside and for a lot of our clients, that gold has sentimental as well as financial value,” says Manuel Franck (Co-founder). “A secured loan lets people access the cash they need now, on their terms, while keeping the option to reclaim the asset once the loan is settled.”

About the loan structure

LoanAgainst provides an illustrative example on its website: a client borrowing R10,000 over a three-month term would repay the capital plus fees at the end of the agreed term, with all costs disclosed upfront before the loan is taken out. The company says transparency on fees and repayment terms is central to how it operates.
