What Are Bitcoin Domains?

What are Bitcoin domains

Bitcoin is the first digital asset the world has ever seen, and with its success, we would always see copycats and derivatives of it attempting to try and improve on bitcoin. This industry is often referred to as the altcoin market or blockchain industry. Due to bitcoin's popularity, people often use it as a generic term for all blockchain and cryptocurrency projects and terms, which can create confusion.

Bitcoin is a monetary network; it's only used to transfer value from one user to another, using a blockchain to keep records and does not provide for other digital services like keeping records of other data.

There is no such thing as a "bitcoin domain", and rather than naming convention could mean one of two things.

  • A standard ICANN domain with either a .bitcoin TLD extension or a domain with bitcoin in the name.
  • A blockchain domain is an NFT standard run on multiple smart contract blockchains like Ethereum and Zilliqa.

Looking for a bitcoin domain

If you're looking for a standard web domain, you can purchase one from one of your local hosting providers or use an international hosting provider. If the domain you're interested in is taken, you'll have to approach the domain owner directly or use a broker to negotiate a deal.

Alternatively, you can look for a cheaper variation of the domain to use for your website or email account.

Looking for a blockchain domain

If you're searching for a bitcoin domain that is actually for an NFT crypto domain, then you would have to contact a minting service provider like Unstoppable Domains. You will need to create an account with Unstoppable Domains and browse through all the blockchain domain variations they have available.

Should the domain you wanted be unavailable with Unstoppable domains, then it has already been sold and is owned by another party. In this case, could find it on sites like OpenSea for sale, where you can bid for the domain and try and tempt the owner to part with it.

There are also blockchain domains with the .btc TLD extension created on a remora chain known as stacks. These .BTC domains are registered through a smart contract on Stacks, secured by Bitcoin. This smart contract implements a decentralized name registry written in Clarity lang. Ownership of every .BTC name is represented in a hash of the Bitcoin blockchain. Instead of spamming the bitcoin blockchain with name registrations, thousands of Stacks transactions settle in a single transaction on the bitcoin blockchain.

You can secure a .btc domain using the following portal

Now that you know how decentralised domain registration works, will you be getting one? Do you own one already? If not you can purchase one today at Unstoppable Domains.
