13 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Link-In-Bio Tools
04 May 2023 | 0 comments | Posted by Che Kohler in nichemarket Advice
The growth of Instagram and its limitations on outbound links has seen a stop-gap service known as Link in bio or smart bio tools pop up. Services like Linktree have gained popularity as a convenient way to direct followers from social media platforms to multiple destinations with just one link. While these services seem like a great solution to the limitation of having only one clickable link in your social media bio, there are several downsides to using them.
As they say, convenience always comes at a price, and you need to be willing to pay the price.
For the average social media influencer, it shouldn't be too much of an issue, but for businesses who rely on squeezing out every bit of data and value from social media, you may want to rethink your use of these services.
If you're unsure of what this innocent shortened link is doing to your business, take some time to look at my arguments and then decide if it's still worth it.
1. Loss of control over user experience
When you use a service like Linktree, you are essentially outsourcing a critical part of your online presence. By doing so, you relinquish control over the user experience, as visitors must first navigate through a third-party platform before accessing your content. This extra step can create friction and detract from the seamless experience that visitors expect when interacting with your brand.
2. Dependence on an external service
Using a third-party service means that you are placing your trust in a company outside of your control. If the service experiences downtime or technical issues, your audience may encounter problems accessing your content. This reliance on an external platform can negatively impact your brand's credibility and leave you vulnerable to disruptions that are beyond your control.
3. Potential for increased bounce rates
As mentioned earlier, introducing an additional step in the user journey can create friction and discourage users from exploring your content further. This extra hurdle can lead to increased bounce rates, as visitors may grow frustrated and abandon their pursuit of your content altogether. A direct link to your website or a specific landing page is more likely to retain user interest and encourage further engagement.
4. Limited customisation options
Services like Linktree typically offer limited customisation options in terms of design and layout. As a result, your custom landing page may not align with your brand's visual identity, creating a disjointed experience for users.
In contrast, creating a landing page on your own website allows for complete control over design elements, ensuring that your branding remains consistent across all platforms.
Another benefit of using your own domain with a custom landing page is that you can create variations for A/B testing or split up the page so that it renders differently for users coming from different social media platforms.
If you plan to have different Instagram accounts for different branches, for example, a custom landing page that maintains a consistent message versus sending a user to a generic page. As a result, the custom page will always outperform the disjointed user experience.
5. Inability to leverage your own domain authority
When you use a third-party service to create a landing page, you miss out on the opportunity to build your own domain authority. Domain authority, a metric developed by Moz, is a score that predicts a website's ability to rank on search engine results pages (SERPs).
By directing traffic to a third-party site instead of your own domain, you forfeit the chance to strengthen your website's domain authority, which can negatively impact your search engine rankings.
6. Lack of in-depth analytics
While Link In Bio services like Linktree and Tailwind Smart Bio provide some analytics, they often pale compared to the robust data available through tools like Google Analytics. Click data from these 3rd party tools are interesting but not actionable data points.
By hosting your own landing page, you can gain valuable insights into user behaviour, conversion rates, and other critical metrics that can help you optimise your online presence and drive growth.
7. Potential for diluted branding
Using a service like Linktree can dilute your brand, as your custom landing page will be hosted on a platform that's also being used by countless other businesses and individuals. This shared environment can make it difficult for your brand to stand out and may even cause confusion among users who encounter similar-looking pages from other brands.
Instead, you could either build a custom URL on your site or build your own branded short links by purchasing a shortened version of your domain and redirecting it to the landing pages you require.
8. Missed opportunities for retargeting and tracking
When a user lands on your website, you are already able to profile their intent and start pulling them into the right funnel through customer profiling. Retargeting and tracking pixels are essential tools for digital marketers looking to understand and engage their audience better.
By hosting your landing page on a third-party platform, you may face restrictions on implementing these pixels or be unable to do so altogether. Instead of collecting a wider data set from that first interaction, you are using a smaller set of data which may be less effective when building retargeting campaigns.
This limitation can hinder your ability to effectively track and retarget users, hampering your digital marketing efforts.
9. Loss of potential SEO benefits
A well-optimised landing page hosted on your own domain can offer valuable SEO benefits, such as improved search engine rankings and increased organic traffic. When you drive traffic that is high quality, you have a lower bounce rate and high engagement, and this is a positive signal to both social media apps and search engines, and you maintain that attribution with your domain.
By using a service like Linktree, you forgo these advantages, as your custom landing page will not contribute to your website's overall SEO efforts. This can result in missed opportunities to attract new visitors and grow your online presence.
10. Privacy and data ownership concerns
When you use a third-party service, you may have limited control over your data and may need to comply with their privacy policies. This can raise concerns about data ownership and privacy, as you may be required to share sensitive user information with the platform.
In contrast, hosting your own landing page allows you to maintain full control over your data and ensure that you are adhering to privacy regulations such as the GDPR and CCPA.
11. Possible negative impact on website performance
Using third-party services can sometimes lead to slower website performance, as your visitors' browsers must load additional resources from the service's servers. This can result in longer page load times and a subpar user experience, which can ultimately drive potential customers away.
You're also adding an additional step in the conversion process, and for every click you demand from a user, you are also turning away users and losing people along the way.
By hosting your own landing page, you can optimise your site's performance and ensure a faster, smoother experience for users.
12. Incompatibility with ad blockers
Ad blockers are becoming increasingly popular among internet users, and some ad-blocking software may inadvertently block third-party services like Linktree.
This can result in broken links or inaccessible content for users who have ad blockers installed, creating a negative experience and potentially causing them to abandon your site.
Since you have no control over these 3rd party domains, you won't know if they're running correctly or providing the ideal user experience as opposed to your own site, where you can monitor bounce rate/engagement rates on a consistent basis.
13. Attribution issues when tracking
When you leverage link-in-bio tools, you're adding an additional step in your user journey which complicates your tracking. This isn't an issue if you only have one social media profile using the 3rd party tool because you can always make the assumption it's coming from, for example, your Instagram, but it doesn't work as well if you have multiple Instagrams or multiple social media accounts driving traffic to these links.
Instead of now getting the tracking of the original source, you have one source instead, such as Linktree. When you combine all your organic profile clicks into one, you have less oversight over which profiles are driving traffic and what content drives users to click through from your profile.
Keeping it in house
While services like Linktree may initially seem like an attractive solution to the problem of limited clickable links on social media, the drawbacks of using these services are numerous. By hosting your own landing page, you can maintain control over your online presence, optimise your user experience, and reap the benefits of improved SEO and analytics.
Ultimately, investing time and resources into building a custom landing page on your own domain can provide a more robust and sustainable approach to managing your online presence and driving growth for your brand.
